Baughman Jr., MD today announced the results of his research into the "series" of veterans' deaths acknowledged by the Surgeon General of the Army. Upon reading the May 24, 2008, Charleston (WV) Gazette article "Vets Taking Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Drugs Die in Sleep," Baughman began to investigate why these reported deaths were "different."  And, why they were likely, the "tip of an iceberg." Andrew White, Eric Layne, Nicholas Endicott and Derek Johnson were four West Virginia veterans who died in their sleep in early 2008. Baughman's research suggests that they did not commit suicide and did not "overdose" leading to coma as suggested by the military.  All were diagnosed with PTSD.  All seemed "normal" when they went to bed.  And, all were on Seroquel (an antipsychotic) Paxil (an antidepressant) and Klonopin (a benzodiazepine).   They were not comatose and unarousable - with pulse and respirations or pulse intact, responsive to CPR, surviving transport to a hospital, frequently surviving.  These were sudden cardiac deaths.         (More)          Gas build-up threatens North Sea oil rig Workers evacuated as Norwegian engineers pump cement into offshore well to prevent explosion as Deepwater crisis highlights environmental dangers of drilling   Ninety oil workers have been evacuated from a North Sea rig as engineers fight to control a huge build up of pressure in a well which critics say has the potential to blow-up the platform and cause a major environmental problem. The Norwegian company Statoil has been pumping cement into an offshore well on the Gullfaks field in an operation similar to the one being attempted today by BP in the Gulf of Mexico. The equivalent of around 70,000 barrels of oil a day of production from the Gullfaks C, Tordis and Gimle platforms has been shut down and more than 90 staff evacuated from the area, which lies in Norwegian waters. The country's industry regulator said it was the third well control incident on Gullfaks in the past six months.        (More)          BP ­ Beyond Prosecution? By Jim Kirwan   British Petroleum ought not to be 'Beyond Prosecution' and yet that appears to be exactly what the 'BP' stands for. The political failure to look back twenty years ago into the Exxon-Valdez oil spill that enabled the massive failures throughout the Deepwater Horizon blowout.   That failure-to-prosecute then is what is keeping criminal prosecutions in the Gulf off-the-table now. This failure to act, or even to appear to act now, makes it impossible to do what the entirely criminal establishment normally always does. Namely, to demand that we 'not play the blame game and look only to the future'. McIntyre   The US government has readily admitted that it does not have the skill of equipment to stop the oil rising from the wreck of the Deepwater Horizon rig. And, it is beginning to question whether BP plc (NYSE: BP) has any solutions at all. That leaves the possibility that the release of crude, which is variously estimated at 5,000 to 95,000 barrels a day, may go on indefinitely. BP said today that its total cost for the disaster was now $760 million.Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar told the press on Sunday he was “not completely” confident that BP knows what it’s doing.  BP admitted over the weekend that it current capture device was not working as well as expected. That means that the amount of oils which is reaching the Louisiana coastline will rise. By David Usborne in New York   As the investigation into the BP oil rig explosion accelerates, new information has been surfacing in congressional hearings in Washington pointing to possible problems with the casings that were put around the bore hole in the sea bed and the cementing that is critical to sealing it up. Halliburton did the cementing at the well, under contract to BP. It was to inject the cement to seal the casing in the bore hole to make any seepage of gas and oil impossible, and insert the cement plug that would have allowed BP to return at a later date to begin production. Last August, Halliburton was involved in the cementing of a well in the Timor Sea off the coast of Australia that similarly blew out, sending thousands of gallons into the ocean.        (More)           Third Oil Leak in Gulf The New York Times today says BP’s “Top Kill” attempt to plug the hole from the exploded Deepwater Horizon oil rig has failed. Meanwhile, scientists have found a third oil leak/plume.   AP reported on May 27th that scientists had found a second giant plume deep under the water. The plume is 22 miles long and 6 miles wide. Today, May 28, the Washington Post is reporting that a third giant underwater plume has been discovered: A Louisiana scientist said his crew had located another vast plume of oily globs, miles in the opposite direction.James H. Cowan Jr., a professor at Louisiana State University, said his crew on Wednesday found a plume of oil in a section of the gulf 75 miles west of the source of the leak.        (More)          Criminal Negligence: Despite Knowing It Had a Damaged Blowout Preventer, BP STILL Cut Corners By Removing the Single Most Important Safety Measure   Several weeks before the Gulf oil explosion, a key piece of safety equipment - the blowout preventer - was damaged. As the Times of London reports: [Mike Williams, the chief electronics technician on the Deepwater Horizon, and one of the last workers to leave the doomed rig] claimed that the blowout preventer was then damaged when a crewman accidentally moved a joystick, applying hundreds of thousands of pounds of force. Pieces of rubber were found in the drilling fluid, which he said implied damage to a crucial seal. But a supervisor declared the find to be “not a big deal”, Mr Williams alleged. UC Berkeley engineering professor Bob Bea told 60 Minutes that a damaged blowout preventer not only may lead to a catastrophic accident like the Gulf oil spill, but leads to inaccurate pressure readings, so that the well operator doesn't know the real situation, and cannot keep the rig safe.
